What are you feeding your kids?

I'm stunned.
I just saw a clip of Jamie Oliver in a classroom with what looked to be first graders. Jamie held up a cluster of vine tomatoes...none of the kids knew what they were, the same thing happened when he held up a beet, cauliflower, eggplant...and on it went.
I've been mumbling, sometimes ranting - about what the average American feeds their child, it's pretty pathetic. Chicken fingers and tater tots seem to be the norm...along with mac and cheese and drive through mickey d's...lovely.
If you love your kids start to feed them like you love them...stop poisoning them.
Heck...plant a garden and show them where food really comes from.
And yes...the gardening here at this old farm has already started, the raspberries are tied, we've planted two kinds of peas, beets, spinach, arugula...and four kinds of lettuce.
The cilantro is growing like crazy...time to chop up some tomatoes and make some salsa!
I still can't get the image out of my head...a whole classroom of kids and not one had a clue what that round red veggie was.
Sad.
Heartbreaking actually.

It is sad. When I was a kid the garden was my favorite source of instant Summer snacks!

Quilly - That's the case here too...just yesterday I told hubby which row of lettuce I planted for him to snack on ;) Of course puppy thinks that the raspberries are all hers.

That is very sad. Archer actually told me about this show - I now have it scheduled to tape for the season.

While we love mac-n-cheese (LOVE it!) my kid also thinks brussel sprouts are the best! Can't beat that! I also LOVE that my high schooler still enjoys accompanying me to the Green Barn/Youngstocks to make sure I get the right fruits and veggies...Good boy.

I can't wait to watch the show and see how Jamie does converting school lunches and minds!

Jerrie - Oh, mac n cheese is yummo...especially home made...yikes, when I was a kid that's what I would choose for my birthday dinner - but my mom always made a salad with lots of veggies and usually broccoli.
I looove it that Archer is a brussel sprout fan!

It is heart breaking. When I was a kid, I always had a little garden of my own, with carrots, beets and parsley. I loved vegetables, despite a mother who never ate them and actually told me time and again that she didn't know how I could eat that stuff. Guess I was weird. I loved spinach. Still do.

Bobbie - I'll bet you were a cute little gardener...I'm wondering who taught you about planting - perhaps a neighbor or grandparents?

You asked who was my mentor? Funny - it was my mother. She really loved gardening. Just didn't like veggies. We lived in PA, where the soil was so rich, you just had to look at it and think about what you wanted to grow - and it did.

I saw that program too and it made me heartsick. I grew up in a city, but from an early age I was taught how to identify various vegetables and other foods. I find it appalling that those children didn't have a clue!

It is enraging isnt it. I am happy to report that my kids are helping us in the gardne, walked the market with us and constantly are exposed to every kind of veggie and fruit you can imagine.

Its a crying shame but kinda goes along with all the other b---sh-- that goes on with America and its lull into submission, etc.
